Purple-leaved coral bells are a varied group of Heuchera perennials grown mainly for colorful, rounded foliage. Leaf shades, mature size, flowering stems, and winter persistence differ among species and cultivars, so a purple foliage selection may look and behave differently from another coral bells plant.
## Garden Use
The compact foliage clumps suit borders, containers, and groundcover plantings, where dark leaves can contrast with green or silver foliage. Small bell-shaped flowers rise on airy stems in summer; flower color varies across the genus. These plants work well as foliage accents in mixed beds or containers.
## Growing Conditions
Most Heuchera grow in partial or dappled shade, though darker-leaved forms often tolerate more sun. Provide moist, well-drained soil and water new plants as they establish. Iowa State Extension describes Heuchera as a North American genus with wide variation in leaf, flower, and habit, while the [RHS growing guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/heuchera/growing-guide) notes their use in borders, containers, and groundcover. See also [Iowa State’s coral bells guide](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/article/2021/06/heuchera-or-coral-bells).
## Maintenance
Check shallow crowns each spring and reset any that have lifted. A protective mulch after the first hard frost can reduce freeze-thaw heaving. Remove damaged leaves and spent flower stems as needed, and avoid permanently wet soil.
