Heucherella 'Onyx' is a compact foliage perennial for shaded gardens, grown for its deep purple-black leaves. Its mounding form makes a low layer in a woodland edge, shaded border or container, while airy flower stems add a light vertical accent in summer. See the [Terra Nova cultivar profile](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/heucherella-onyx/) and the [USPP29926 patent record](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP29926P2/en) for the exact named selection.
## Site and planting
Give it partial to full shade and organically rich, well-drained soil that stays evenly moist but not waterlogged. The near-black foliage reads especially well against fine-textured greens, chartreuse leaves and pale flowers. Use it in a sheltered border or at the front of a woodland planting, where the mound can be seen close-up. Protect it from hot afternoon sun and prolonged drought, which can scorch foliage.
## Seasonal interest
Leaves carry the main ornamental role through spring and summer, with small flower stems rising in early summer. In mild winters, foliage may persist; colder weather can cause dieback, with fresh growth returning as conditions warm. The dark leaves provide steady contrast with brighter neighbors rather than a large flower display.
## Maintenance
Water regularly during establishment and dry spells, then check the soil before watering. Apply a thin mulch without covering the crown. Remove spent flower stems and damaged leaves; divide crowded clumps in spring if the center thins.
