About Mahogany Splendor Hibiscus

Mahogany Splendor is a selection of Hibiscus acetosella grown mainly for deeply lobed, burgundy foliage that recalls a small Japanese maple. Ball Seed lists it at 36–60 inches tall and 24–30 inches wide, with upright growth, full sun, and hardiness zones 8a–9b ([plant profile](https://info.ballseed.com/PlantInfo/?phid=033105935026103)). ## Garden Use Use the bold leaves as a warm-season focal plant in a sunny border, large container, or foliage arrangement. The plant can reach several feet during a long growing season, so leave room around it and avoid crowding smaller neighbors. Its flowers may appear late where the season is long, but the burgundy leaves provide the main display. ## Growing Conditions Grow in sun and fertile, well-drained soil. The cultivar is heat tolerant and can handle dry periods after establishment, though young plants need regular water and mature plants benefit from irrigation during extended dry spells. It is perennial in warmer zones and grown as an annual in colder climates ([PanAmerican Seed culture sheet](https://www.panamseed.com/utility/CultureSheetPDF.aspx?pagename=culture.aspx&txtphid=033100001024654&type=Ann)). ## Maintenance Pinch young shoots once to encourage branching. Mulch to help conserve soil moisture, and water well during prolonged dry weather. Cut back frost-damaged growth after cold weather; overwintering is practical only in suitable warm conditions.
