Hibiscus brackenridgei, the native yellow hibiscus of Hawaiʻi, may grow as a shrub or a small tree and bears showy yellow flowers, sometimes with red or maroon centers. It suits sunny, dry sites with well-drained soil and can be used as a hedge, screen, or specimen.
## Appearance
The Hawaiian species profile records shrub forms ranging from 2–6 feet to taller plants, as well as small-tree forms 15–30 feet high. It gives a typical spread of 8–10 feet. Grayish to medium-green leaves accompany bright yellow flowers; flowering is most common in winter and spring in Hawaiʻi, with blooms possible at other times.
## Growing Conditions
Give this species full sun or partial sun and well-drained soil. The source describes it as adapted to dry conditions and lists drought and heat tolerance. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot or powdery mildew.
## Seasonal Interest
Flowers commonly appear from February through May in Hawaiʻi, but may bloom sporadically at other times. Young plants can be pruned to encourage branching.
## Maintenance
Prune after flowering when needed, and avoid pruning during its winter-spring flowering period. Allow room for the mature spread and protect the shallow-rooted plant from strong winds. [Native Hawaiʻi Plants: Hibiscus brackenridgei](https://nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plants/hibiscus-brackenridgei/)
