About Orange Hibiscus

Orange Hibiscus brings warm color to sunny patios and frost-free gardens. Tropical Chinese hibiscus is an evergreen woody shrub with glossy foliage and large, funnel-shaped flowers that appear through the warm growing season. ## Planting and Display Grow this orange-flowered hibiscus in a bright position with full sun or light afternoon shade, especially in hot climates. Chinese hibiscus prefers rich, moist, well-drained soil; its size varies among cultivars, so leave room for the plant to develop rather than crowding it against a path. ## Seasonal Display Flowers are showy but short-lived individually, with new blooms appearing seasonally. A container makes it easier to provide winter shelter where temperatures fall below the tropical plant’s comfort range. Chinese hibiscus is rated for USDA Zones 9–11. [North Carolina Extension’s Chinese hibiscus profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hibiscus-rosa-sinensis/common-name/chinese-hibiscus/) and [Smithsonian Gardens’ tropical hibiscus care sheet](https://gardens.si.edu/learn/educational-resources/plant-care-sheets/care-of-hibiscus-rosa-sinensis/) ## Maintenance Keep the soil consistently moist but well drained, and protect the plant from frost and drying winds. Prune in early spring to shape fresh growth; flowers develop on new growth, so avoid late-season pruning that would remove developing shoots.
