About Ardens Rose of Sharon Althea Shrub

Rose of Sharon ‘Ardens’ is a deciduous shrub with lobed green leaves and double pale pink-purple flowers, each with a maroon center that fades to bluer tones toward the petal edges. In a sunny, sheltered position it flowers from late summer into mid-autumn, adding layered color to a shrub border. ## Features The Royal Horticultural Society describes ‘Ardens’ as compact and erect, becoming more spreading with age, and lists mature height and spread of 1.5–2.5 metres. Its [cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/54878/hibiscus-syriacus-ardens-d/details) records full sun, loamy soil, and a preference for moist but well-drained conditions. ## Growing Choose a warm, sheltered site with neutral, humus-rich soil. Allow room for a mature shrub to spread, and protect its roots with organic mulch in colder weather. The [Cornell woody plant cultivar record](https://woodyplants.cals.cornell.edu/cultivar/11041) also identifies the double pink-to-rose flowering form. ## Maintenance Water during establishment and in prolonged dry spells. The RHS recommends little or no routine pruning; remove damaged or crossing growth as needed and avoid cutting back heavily if preserving the natural shrub form is desired.
