About Blueberry Smoothie™ Rose of Sharon

Blueberry Smoothie™ is a deciduous rose of Sharon shrub with large, fully double blue-violet flowers and rich green leaves. Its upright branching and summer-to-fall flowering make it a strong choice for a specimen, mixed border or flowering screen. ## Selection and setting The exact shrub selection is DS01BS, covered by U.S. Plant Patent 26,662, published April 26, 2016. Plan for roughly 8–10 ft of height and 3–6 ft of width, with USDA hardiness from zones 5–9. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. ## Growing conditions Give the shrub sun for most of the day, with light afternoon shade tolerated, and plant in well-drained soil. Rose of Sharon grows in a range of soil types, but steady drainage helps prevent waterlogged roots. Use it where there is room for a tall, vase-shaped shrub and its late-season blooms. Once established, the plant is drought-tolerant. Prune only as needed to shape the shrub, preferably in late winter or early spring before new leaves emerge; routine hard pruning is unnecessary.
