About Pink Rose of Sharon Althea

Pink Rose of Sharon is a deciduous shrub selection of Hibiscus syriacus, a summer-flowering member of the mallow family. It suits sunny to partly shaded gardens where its upright growth and seasonal flowers can add height to a mixed border. ## Growing conditions The species grows in full sun or part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It flowers on new growth during summer, and its blooms can attract bees and other pollinators. Allow room for a mature shrub, and water during prolonged dry weather while it establishes. The species profile describes a range of mature sizes, so local growing conditions and pruning can affect the final shape. ## Maintenance Prune in early spring before new growth begins, removing dead or crossing branches and shaping lightly as needed. Keep the root zone evenly moist during establishment, then water during extended dry periods. See the [NC State Extension rose of Sharon profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hibiscus-syriacus/common-name/rose-of-sharon/) for species-level growing information.
