Sea hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus) is an evergreen tropical tree or large shrub with a rounded, spreading crown and green, heart-shaped leaves. Its large yellow flowers open in the morning, then age toward orange and pink before falling the same day; [NParks](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/2/9/2954) records it from coastal forest, sandy and rocky shores, brackish riverbanks, and mangroves.
### Form and setting
Mature size varies with site and climate. The [South Australian Plant Selector](https://plantselector.botanicgardens.sa.gov.au/Plants/Details/3143) lists cultivated trees at 4–8 metres high and 3–4 metres wide; NParks records trees up to 15 metres in rich tropical soils. [Kew’s accepted taxon entry](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn%3Alsid%3Aipni.org%3Anames%3A30143354-2/general-information) places the species in tropical and subtropical regions. It is useful as a coastal screen or shade tree where the climate suits it.
### Growing conditions
Full sun to part shade is suitable. The species tolerates salt spray, saline soils, and poor soils; provide moderate water while establishing. Its coastal tolerance does not establish a USDA hardiness zone, so use local climate guidance.
## Maintenance
Routine care is light. If a single- or double-trunk form is wanted, remove basal suckers as they appear. NParks lists seed, stem cuttings, and suckers as propagation methods.
