About Abiqua Drinking Gourd - Hosta

‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’ is a distinctive hosta with broad, deeply cupped blue-green leaves. Its rounded clump makes a bold foliage accent in a shaded garden. ## Plant profile The American Hosta Growers Association lists this cultivar as a medium hosta with a mature mound about 22 inches high and 46 inches wide. The Chicago Botanic Garden describes its leaves as deeply cupped and corrugated, with strong substance and a powdery blue-green appearance. White flowers rise above the foliage in summer. ## Garden care Hostas grow best in rich, evenly moist soil with good drainage and protection from hot afternoon sun. Morning light or bright shade helps show the foliage while reducing scorch. Keep the crown clear of wet, packed debris and water during dry spells. ## Maintenance Remove dead leaves after the growing season and divide the clump when it becomes crowded. The thick leaves are often less attractive to slugs than thinner hosta foliage, though damage can still occur.
