Hosta 'City of Lights' is a named plantain lily grown chiefly for its ornamental foliage. White summer flowers rise above the leafy clump, making it useful in shaded borders, woodland edges, and containers.
## Light and soil
Grow in partial to full shade, in fertile soil that stays evenly moist while draining freely. Protect leaves from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds. Water regularly during establishment and through extended dry spells.
## Landscape use
Use as a single accent or repeat it along a shaded path, beneath deciduous trees, or among ferns and other shade perennials. Leave room for the clump to widen, and keep its crown visible rather than burying it under mulch. ## Seasonal interest
Fresh leaves emerge in spring; foliage remains the main display through the growing season, and white flowers appear in summer. Hostas die back after frost and return from their crowns the following spring.
Keep the root zone moist but not waterlogged, and renew a light organic mulch each spring without covering the crown. Remove weathered leaves after dormancy. Divide established clumps in spring if they outgrow their space or need rejuvenation.
