About Earth Angel - Hosta

Earth Angel Hosta is a large, clump-forming sport of ‘Blue Angel’, valued for heart-shaped blue-green leaves edged in cream. Its broad mound makes a bold foliage specimen for shaded borders, with pale summer flower stalks rising above the leaves. ## Plant profile This Hosta was discovered as a tissue-culture mutation by Hans Hansen in 2002 and was named Hosta of the Year in 2009. A mature plant is described at about 30 inches tall and 40 inches wide; the foliage mound can take several years to reach full size. The [Chicago Botanic Garden profile](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/hosta-earth-angel-earth-angel-hosta) describes its blue leaves, creamy margins, and mounded habit. ## Growing conditions Grow Earth Angel in partial to full shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Direct cultivar guidance lists USDA zones 2–9. Its deciduous leaves form a clump, with cream margins that may show yellow tones as they develop. The [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/198946/hosta-earth-angel-v/details) describes the foliage, shade exposure, soils, and seasonal care; [Perennials.com](https://www.perennials.com/plants/hosta-earth-angel.html) records the cultivar’s zone range and light-colored margins. ## Maintenance Divide established clumps in spring or fall. Remove spent foliage as needed and clear dead leaves after they die back at the end of the growing season. Check the broad leaves for slug or snail damage, and keep the soil moist while preserving good drainage.
