Hosta ‘First Frost’ is a mounding perennial with powdery blue-green leaves edged in yellow that fade toward white as the season advances. The American Hosta Society records the cultivar as a sport of ‘Halcyon’, about 16 inches high and 36 inches across, with pale lavender flowers ([registration](https://www.hostaregistrar.org/search_item/1776)).
## Foliage and flowers
The cool blue-green foliage carries a creamy margin that changes from yellow to white; tubular pale lavender flowers appear in mid to late summer ([RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/222188/hosta-first-frost-v/details)). This color transition keeps the leaves attractive well beyond their spring emergence.
## Growing conditions
Grow in partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. The cultivar is listed for USDA Zones 2–9 by [Perennials.com](https://www.perennials.com/plants/hosta-first-frost.html). Its broad, low mound suits shaded borders and containers, or a position below shrubs where the leaves can fill open soil.
## Maintenance
Hostas go dormant in fall; remove dying foliage before mid-spring and keep moisture even through dry weather. Divide established clumps in spring or fall if they become crowded, and protect fresh leaves from slug and snail feeding.
