About Francee - Hosta

Hosta ‘Francee’ forms a broad, low mound of green leaves with narrow white margins that hold their variegation well in sun. Lavender flowers rise on 30-inch scapes in mid to late summer; Walters Gardens lists a 14-inch height, 36-inch spread, and USDA zones 3–9 for this cultivar ([cultivar profile](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSFRA)). ## Appearance and placement The wide, low form works well at the front of a shaded border or along an edge. ‘Francee’ tolerates more sun than many hostas, and its margins hold color, but the grower still recommends filtered or dappled light; morning sun is safer than hot afternoon exposure. Rich, organic, moist but well-drained soil supports a full leaf canopy, while sandy loam gives roots more air than heavy clay. ## Water and growth Keep soil evenly moist during active growth and let excess water drain. Extended drought can push hostas into dormancy. Allow the clump to mature before dividing, and keep at least three eyes on each division so it can re-establish well. ## Maintenance Remove declining foliage as it dies back. Divide when the clump becomes crowded, then replant in a shaded, well-drained site.
