Create design onlineAbout 'Gold Standard' Hosta
Hosta ‘Gold Standard’ opens with light-green leaf centers that become increasingly gold toward early summer, framed by dark-green margins. Pale lavender flowers appear on 30-inch scapes in midsummer; Walters Gardens lists a 20-inch height, 36-inch spread, and USDA zones 3–9 for this cultivar ([cultivar profile](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSGOS)).
## Foliage and placement
This colorful foliage hosta suits shaded borders, mass plantings, and a specimen position where the changing leaf color can be seen. Morning sun can strengthen the gold tones, but filtered light or light shade protects the leaves from hot afternoon sun. Mature plants form a substantial leafy presence, so leave room for the spread.
## Soil and watering
Use fertile, organic, well-drained soil and keep it consistently moist while the plant is growing. Hosta roots benefit from aeration; sandy loam is preferable to compacted, heavy clay. Acidic to neutral soil suits the genus. Avoid leaving the crown in waterlogged ground.
## Maintenance
Remove foliage after it declines at the end of the season. Divide a mature clump when needed, keeping several eyes on each division, and water the new sections until established.
