About Halcyon - Hosta

Hosta ‘Halcyon’ is a mid-sized blue hosta with thick, pointed, frosty blue-green leaves. Pale blue-violet flowers rise on 28-inch scapes in midsummer; Walters Gardens lists a height of 18 inches, a 36-inch spread, and USDA zones 3–9 for this cultivar ([cultivar profile](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSHAL)). ## Foliage and placement The cool-toned leaves give shaded borders and containers a steady foliage accent, and the plant also works in mass plantings or as an edging. Choose part to full shade; high-filtered or dappled light helps prevent leaf scorch. The thick foliage is noted for good slug resistance, though it is still sensible to check plants during damp weather. ## Soil and water Plant in fertile, organic soil that drains well, and maintain consistent moisture through active growth. Hosta roots benefit from aeration, so sandy loam is preferable to heavy clay. Acidic to neutral soil is suitable. Avoid hot afternoon sun and waterlogged conditions. ## Maintenance Remove dead foliage as it dies back. Established clumps can be divided when they become crowded; retain several eyes on each division and water it in well.
