About Hyacinthina - Hosta

The Hosta fortunei variety hyacinthina forms a vigorous clump of broadly ovate, boldly veined gray-green leaves narrowly edged in gray, with pale-purple flowers on upright stems reaching 75 cm. The Royal Horticultural Society gives mature height and spread as ranges of 0.5–1 m and recommends partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil ([RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/48869/hosta-fortunei-var-hyacinthina/details)). ## Foliage and setting Use this deciduous hosta in a shaded border, beneath shrubs, or as ground cover where its broad leaves can knit into a clump. It grows in partial shade and benefits from shelter from cold, drying winds. The RHS lists clay and loam soils with acidic or neutral pH. Its H7 hardiness rating is on the UK scale and does not correspond to a USDA zone. ## Seasonal care Hostas generally flower in early summer. Keep the soil fertile and evenly moist while allowing water to drain freely. Slugs and snails may damage the foliage, especially in damp conditions; potted plants can also be vulnerable to vine weevil. ## Maintenance Remove spent or dead leaves as they decline at the end of the growing season. Divide the clump in late summer or early spring, keeping healthy roots with each section.
