About Whirlwind - Hosta

Hosta ‘Whirlwind’ forms a mounded clump with pale-centered leaves, green veining and dark green margins. It produces pale lavender flowers in summer and is listed for USDA Zones 3–8. ## Foliage and setting The changing leaf center shifts from pale tones toward green as the season advances, while the dark margins keep the foliage pattern distinct. Allow roughly 19–20 inches of height and a spread near 40 inches. Partial to full shade suits the plant, and ordinary garden soil with steady moisture supports its foliage. The [Chicago Botanic Garden](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/hosta-whirlwind-whirlwind-hosta) lists the mature dimensions and hummingbird association; [Iowa State Extension](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/hosta-types-and-cultivars-iowa) describes the leaf pattern and flowers. ## Seasonal interest Its foliage carries the planting from spring until frost, followed by pale lavender summer flowers. Use the clump in a shaded border where the variegation can be viewed at close range. ## Maintenance Water during extended dry periods and clear away damaged or declining leaves. Avoid burying the crown under mulch.
