About Frances Williams - Hosta

Hosta 'Frances Williams' forms a broad clump of puckered, veined blue-green leaves with irregular yellow-green margins. Walters Gardens lists this selection at about 22 inches tall by 48 inches wide, in USDA Zones 3–9, with white flowers in midsummer ([cultivar profile](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSFRW)). ## Garden Use The bold foliage makes a useful focal point or mass planting beneath trees and shrubs. Allow several feet of width for mature leaves and site it where the variegation can be seen from a path or seating area. ## Growing Conditions Partial to full shade helps protect the leaves, especially in hot afternoon sun. Grow in fertile clay or loam that drains well while staying evenly moist. The Royal Horticultural Society describes the same cultivar as clump-forming, with gray-green leaves and yellow-green margins, and lists moist but well-drained soil and partial shade ([RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/90814/hosta-frances-williams-sieboldiana-v/details)). ## Maintenance Remove old foliage after it dies back in fall or early spring. Keep the root zone mulched to retain moisture and reduce winter heaving; watch for slug feeding on emerging leaves. Divide established clumps only when they outgrow their space or need renewal.
