About Great Expectations - Hosta

‘Great Expectations’ is a large, slow-growing hosta whose deeply puckered leaves open chartreuse, then develop creamy centers edged in blue-green. The broad mound carries its foliage display from spring into fall, with pale flowers rising above the leaves in summer. [RHS cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/148451/hosta-great-expectations/details), [Chicago Botanic Garden](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/hosta-great-expectations-great-expectations-hosta), and [Green River Nursery](https://www.greenrivernursery.com/product-page/hosta-great-expectations) describe the cultivar’s changing variegation and garden scale. ## Cultivar character Nursery listings identify it as a sport of Hosta sieboldiana ‘Elegans’. Its broad, heart-shaped leaves have strongly impressed veins; the central color shifts from yellow-green toward cream as the season advances. Pale flowers appear on summer scapes, while the foliage remains the main ornamental feature. ## Garden conditions Grow it in part to full shade and moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Hostas tolerate clay and loam when drainage is adequate. Give the mature clump room, using it as a border specimen or a large foliage accent rather than crowding the crown with smaller plants. ## Maintenance Water during extended dry spells, especially while the plant establishes. Remove frost-damaged foliage after it dies back, and divide the clump in spring or late summer if it becomes crowded. Check for slugs and snails, which commonly damage hosta leaves; Iowa State Extension summarizes hosta culture and these routine care points in its [hosta guide](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/all-about-hostas).
