‘Guacamole’ is a vigorous hosta with broad, glossy, puckered leaves: chartreuse to golden centers contrast with a dark green margin. Fragrant pale lavender-to-white flowers rise above the foliage in summer, making the cultivar useful near a patio as well as in a shaded border. [The Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/115334/hosta-guacamole-v/details), [White Flower Farm](https://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/products/hosta-guacamole), and [Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSGUA) document its foliage and flowers.
## Cultivar character
The American Hosta Society’s [Hosta of the Year booklet](https://americanhostasociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Hosta-of-the-Year-booklet-3rd-Ed.pdf) records ‘Guacamole’ as Bob Solberg’s 1994 introduction and a sport of ‘Fragrant Bouquet’. Its substantial leaves brighten as they mature, while the fragrant blooms add a second summer feature.
## Garden conditions
Plant in part shade or shade in moist, well-drained soil; clay or loam can work where water does not stand. The RHS lists mature height and spread from 0.5 to 1 metre, while nursery descriptions give smaller or somewhat broader clumps, so size varies with growing conditions and source.
## Maintenance
Water evenly during establishment and prolonged dry weather. Remove spent flower stalks if a tidy appearance is wanted, and clear dead foliage after frost. Divide established clumps in spring when space is needed; inspect leaves for slugs and snails. Iowa State Extension’s [hosta guide](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/all-about-hostas) covers shade, moisture, division, and common pest issues.
