‘Hadspen Blue’ is a slow-growing Tardiana Group hosta with thick, oval-to-heart-shaped leaves covered by a silvery blue bloom. Pale lavender flowers appear in summer above the compact mound, adding a light vertical accent to its substantial foliage. [The Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/94931/hosta-tardiana-group-hadspen-blue/details) and the [Chicago Botanic Garden](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/hosta-hadspen-blue-hadspen-blue-hosta) describe the cultivar’s foliage and garden use.
## Cultivar character
‘Hadspen Blue’ is treated as a Tardiana Group cultivar and is also listed as Hosta × tardiana ‘Hadspen Blue’. Its cool-toned leaves provide contrast with fine-textured shade plants and spring bulbs without relying on flowers for the main display.
## Garden conditions
Choose part to full shade, especially where afternoon sun is hot. Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained; RHS lists clay, loam, chalk, and sandy soils, and the Chicago Botanic Garden recommends shaded border or specimen placement. The garden’s listing gives USDA zones 3–8.
## Maintenance
Allow the clump to fill in slowly, then divide in spring if it outgrows its space. Remove dead leaves after frost and keep the crown clear of decaying foliage. Watch for slugs and snails, which can scar hosta leaves; Iowa State Extension provides practical [hosta growing guidance](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/all-about-hostas).
