Loyalist - Hosta

Hosta 'Loyalist' is a clumping selection with dark green leaves and bold white centers. The high-contrast foliage brings a bright accent to a partly shaded border or woodland planting. ## Foliage and bloom A reverse sport of 'Patriot', it has thick leaves and reaches about 18 inches tall, with clumps spreading to about 2 feet. Light lavender flowers appear in midsummer. It is suited to USDA zones 3a–8b and part sun to light shade. Moist, well-drained soil with organic matter supports steady growth; water during dry spells, particularly in the first season. Hostas die back with winter dormancy and return from the crown in spring. ## Maintenance Remove frost-damaged leaves after dormancy and refresh mulch without covering the crown. Divide established clumps when they outgrow their space or when additional plants are wanted. Check foliage periodically for slug or snail feeding, especially in damp, sheltered locations.
