About Maui Buttercups - Hosta

Hosta 'Maui Buttercups' is a compact gold-leaved hosta with rounded, deeply cupped and corrugated foliage. Its bright leaves make a small mound that stands out in a shaded border, rock garden, or container. ## Foliage and scale Introduced by Bill Vaughn in 1991, it is a cross of 'Frances Williams' and 'August Moon'. Plants reach about 10–12 inches tall and typically spread 14–24 inches, forming a low mound of thick, puckered leaves. It is hardy in USDA zones 3a–8b. Protect leaves from harsh afternoon sun in warm climates, and water during dry periods so the foliage remains full through summer. ## Maintenance Clear old leaves after winter dormancy and divide the clump in spring if it becomes crowded. In a pot, use a free-draining mix and check moisture more often than in garden soil. Keep mulch light around the crown to prevent excess moisture from collecting there.
