Hosta montana 'Aureomarginata' forms a deciduous clump of glossy, dark green, narrowly ovate leaves edged broadly and irregularly in pale yellow. The Royal Horticultural Society describes summer clusters of very pale purple, bell-shaped flowers and gives a mature height of 0.5–1 m with a spread of 1–1.5 m. ## Foliage and placement
The contrasting margins make this hosta useful in a shaded border or as low ground cover beneath trees and shrubs. Its clump-forming habit keeps the foliage in a defined mound while the broad leaves provide a bright color accent in dimmer garden areas.
## Growing conditions
Give it partial shade and sheltered conditions. The RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand, provided the soil stays moist but drains well. It recommends fertile soil that does not dry out and protection from cold, drying winds. Add organic mulch in spring and water established plants during dry spells.
## Seasonal care
The foliage dies back as part of its deciduous cycle. Watch for slugs and snails; container-grown plants may also be affected by vine weevil. The RHS notes possible virus susceptibility. Divide clumps in early spring or late summer if needed.
## Maintenance
No routine pruning is required. Clear away dead foliage after it has died back and maintain even soil moisture through dry weather.
