About Prairie Sky - Hosta

Prairie Sky is a shade-loving hosta with powdery blue, lightly cupped leaves held in a tight clump. Pale lavender flowers rise above the foliage in mid to late summer, and the leaves retain their showy blue color throughout the growing season. ## Foliage and flowers Use this hosta along a woodland edge, in a shaded border, or in a container. The foliage mound reaches about 14 inches high and spreads about 36 inches; flower scapes rise 18–24 inches above it. Purple-toned flowers and blue leaves create a cool palette, and the broad foliage can cover nearby fading bulb leaves ([Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSPRK)). ## Growing conditions Provide part to full shade and moist, well-drained, highly organic soil. Consistent moisture supports clean foliage, while hot afternoon sun can damage leaves. Hostas are adaptable perennials for woodland and shade gardens ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hosta/); [Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSPRK)). ## Maintenance Mulch to hold soil moisture and reduce winter heaving in cold climates. Remove old foliage after the plant becomes dormant, and watch for slug damage around new spring shoots. A light early-spring fertilizer can support growth; keep granular fertilizer away from the crown ([Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSPRK)).
