About Royal Standard - Hosta

Hosta ‘Royal Standard’ forms a large mound of glossy, wavy green leaves and bears fragrant white flowers tinged with lilac in late summer. Walters Gardens lists the plant at about 26 inches high by 63 inches wide and describes flowering scapes and fragrance; the [RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/91937/hosta-royal-standard/details) gives a broader 0.5–1 metre range for both height and spread. Both sources identify this as the named ‘Royal Standard’ selection. ## Garden Use Give this vigorous hosta room in a woodland border or sheltered shade garden, where the broad green leaves can cover fading spring bulbs. Fragrant flower spikes rise above the foliage and can attract hummingbirds. The glossy leaves also make a useful contrast beside blue or variegated hostas. ## Growing Conditions Walters Gardens reports tolerance of full sun, partial shade, and full shade, while the RHS recommends full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. In sunnier sites, keep moisture consistent and shelter the foliage from drying winds. Its reported dimensions vary between sources, so allow generous lateral space for a mature clump. ## Maintenance Divide only when the clump has matured and more plants are wanted; Walters recommends divisions with at least three eyes. In cold regions, spring mulch helps reduce winter heaving. Clear spent foliage after dormancy and watch for slugs and snails. See the [Walters Gardens profile](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSROS) and [RHS growing notes](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/91937/hosta-royal-standard/details) for cultivar-specific culture.
