Elegans - Hosta

Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans' is a large, blue-leaved hosta with thick, corrugated foliage that brings structure to shaded borders and woodland plantings. Pale, near-white flowers rise above the leaves in early summer, adding a lighter seasonal accent. ## Size and siting [Walters Gardens](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSSEL) lists foliage around 20 inches tall and 40 inches wide, with USDA zones 3–9. The [Chicago Botanic Garden](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/hosta-sieboldiana-elegans-siebold-plaintain-lily) describes established plants at around 3 feet high and 4 feet wide after several years. Clump size varies with age and conditions, so allow room for a substantial plant. ## Soil and water Use fertile, well-drained soil and maintain moisture during dry periods. Part to full shade helps protect the broad blue-green leaves. This hosta suits a woodland garden, shaded border, or container with enough room for its mature spread. ## Maintenance Remove flower scapes after bloom if a tidy appearance matters. Cut back foliage after it dies in fall and clear debris before new spring growth.
