About Medio Variegata - Hosta

Medio Variegata is a wavy-leaved Hosta undulata cultivar with a conspicuous white flame at the center of each leaf, framed by dark- and apple-green margins. Its mound of overlapping foliage gives shaded beds patterned texture; purple flowers open above the leaves in summer. [De Groot’s cultivar page](https://degroot-inc.com/product/hosta-undulata-medio-variegata/) describes the leaf pattern and mass-planting value, while [Gurney’s listing](https://www.gurneys.com/products/hosta-mediovariegata) records the selection as Hosta undulata ‘Mediovariegata’ with lavender flowers. ## Siting and season Place it in part to full shade and organic, moist but well-drained soil; the pale central leaf tissue can scorch in strong afternoon sun. Use it in groups along a woodland edge or border where the wavy leaves can be seen from nearby paths. Hostas emerge in spring, hold their foliage through the growing season, and go dormant with cold weather. ## Maintenance Water during dry periods and mulch to conserve moisture. Slugs and snails can damage hosta foliage, so check leaves periodically. Remove spent flower scapes after bloom; divide the clump every few years if it becomes crowded, or allow it to remain undisturbed. [Iowa State Extension](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/all-about-hostas) and [UGA Extension](https://fieldreport.caes.uga.edu/publications/C955/growing-hostas/) provide general hosta care guidance.
