About Vim and Vigor - Hosta

Hosta ‘Vim and Vigor’ is a large, clump-forming hosta grown for dark-green leaves and pale lavender summer flowers. The [MyHostas cultivar record](https://myhostas.be/db/view/Vim+and+Vigor) identifies it as a 2000 Walters Gardens sport of ‘Sum and Substance’ and reports a mature mound about 33 inches tall and 47 inches wide, with green flower scapes near 59 inches; [NC State’s Hosta profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hosta/) places the genus in Asparagaceae. ## Siting and display Give this very large mound room as a specimen in a shaded border or woodland bed. Hostas grow in part to full shade and fertile, organic-rich, well-drained soil; steady moisture supports broad leaves, while saturated soil can harm roots. Its foliage emerges with a waxy blue cast in spring before becoming glossy dark green. ## Flowers and seasonal interest Pale lavender tubular flowers rise above the leaves on tall scapes in July and August. [Iowa State Extension’s hosta guide](https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/all-about-hostas) describes the clumping habit, spring emergence, and flowers visited by pollinators; it also covers division and removal of spent flowers. ## Maintenance Mulch to conserve moisture and water during hot or dry spells, while avoiding waterlogged soil. Watch for slugs and snails on broad leaves. Remove spent scapes if you prefer a tidy foliage display; divide the clump in early spring if it becomes crowded. [UGA Extension’s growing guide](https://fieldreport.caes.uga.edu/publications/C955/growing-hostas/) recommends organic, well-drained soil, adequate moisture, and spring division.
