Hosta 'Wolverine' forms a dense mound of wavy, tapering blue-green leaves edged in gold, with a cascading outline that remains striking through the growing season. Lavender flowers appear on about 20-inch scapes in late summer.
## Garden Use
Use this medium-sized cultivar as a focal foliage plant, in a shaded border, or in a container where the arching leaves can spill slightly over the edge. Walters Gardens lists a mature mound about 15–18 inches tall and 40 inches wide, and rates it for USDA Zones 3–9. The blue-green and gold contrast pairs well with ferns and other shade perennials. The [Walters Gardens 'Wolverine' profile](https://www.waltersgardens.com/variety.php?ID=HSWOL) provides selection-specific size, color, and bloom details.
## Growing Conditions
Part to full shade is best, with gentle morning sun acceptable; hot afternoon sun can scorch hosta foliage. Provide moist, well-drained, organic soil, and avoid winter saturation. The [North Carolina Extension Hosta guide](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hosta/) describes the genus' shade preference, water needs, seasonal foliage, and dormant period.
## Maintenance
Remove old leaves after dormancy, divide established clumps every few years when needed, and watch for slugs among young leaves. Keep the planting protected from strong wind and hail where practical. North Carolina Extension notes that all parts of hosta are toxic to cats, dogs, and horses.
