Create design onlineAbout Cascade Hops Plant
Cascade is a female cultivar of common hop (Humulus lupulus), grown for its aromatic cones and fast-climbing bines. It is a vigorous perennial that needs a sturdy support; a mature hop bine can reach roughly 18–25 feet, while the Cascade cultivar is valued for reliable yield and its distinctive brewing aroma.
## Growing
Give Cascade full sun and a tall trellis or fence with room for the bines to climb. Hops grow best in well-drained, humus-rich soil; water regularly while maintaining drainage. The 20-foot height recorded for this plant is consistent with extension guidance for hops. Leave room around the planting for airflow.
## Cones and harvest
Female plants produce the cones used in brewing. Cascade is a medium to medium-late cultivar; its cones are generally harvested in late summer to early fall as they mature. Select this variety when you want a home-scale hop crop as well as a vertical screen during the growing season.
## Maintenance
After frost damages the top growth, cut the stems back; new shoots emerge from the crown in spring. Keep the trellis accessible for harvest and maintain good airflow to reduce common mildew problems.
