About Grin and Tonic™ Bigleaf Hydrangea

Grin and Tonic™ is Bloomin’ Easy’s compact selection of Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hokomagrito'. Its broad, flattened mophead clusters open lime green and mature to white, with reblooming flowers extending the display from spring into fall. ## Cultivar and Placement The [Bloomin’ Easy cultivar page](https://bloomineasyplants.com/plant/hydrangea-mac-grin-and-tonic/) lists a 2–3 ft mature size, part sun, and USDA zones 5–9, making this a useful choice for a patio container or the front of a small border. The [cultivar patent](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP35207P2/en) describes a broad-spreading, upright, deciduous shrub with white-and-green flowers and notes its suitability for pot culture. The U.S. plant patent was issued June 6, 2023 as USPP 35,207 P2. ## Growing Conditions Give the plant bright shade or several hours of sun, with protection from harsh afternoon heat. Bigleaf hydrangeas perform best in moist, well-drained soil; water consistently while establishing and during dry weather. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hydrangea-macrophylla/) explains that most bigleaf types bloom on older stems, while reblooming cultivars can also flower on new growth. ## Maintenance Keep the root zone evenly moist and mulch lightly. Prune sparingly, preserving healthy stems; remove winter-damaged growth in spring and avoid late-season shaping that could remove next year’s buds.
