About Everlasting® Amethyst Hydrangea Shrub

Everlasting® Amethyst is the market name for Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hokomathyst'; current HOKO and RHS listings also use the name Magical Amethyst. This rounded, deciduous mophead opens green, develops two-tone pink or blue-purple markings, and gradually fades back toward green from summer into autumn. ## Flowers and Identity The [RHS cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/308626/hydrangea-macrophylla-magical-amethyst-hokomathyst-magical-series-h/details) lists 'Hokomathyst' and Everlasting Amethyst as synonyms, with flowers changing from green to pink or blue-purple and back toward green. It gives a mature range of 1–1.5 m tall and wide. The breeder [HOKO Breeding](https://hokobreeding.com/en/assortment/hydrangeas/magical-amethyst/) markets the same denomination as Magical Amethyst. The U.S. patent is USPP 22,261 P2, issued November 22, 2011 ([patent record](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP22261P2/en)). ## Growing Conditions Use partial shade and moist, well-drained soil; the RHS lists clay, loam, and sandy soils for this selection. Bigleaf hydrangeas generally benefit from protection from hot afternoon sun and consistent moisture. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hydrangea-macrophylla/) notes that most types flower on older stems and that pruning should be completed before late summer. ## Maintenance Water during dry weather and mulch the root zone. Remove dead or damaged stems, then prune selectively after flowering so next year’s buds remain on the plant.
