About Lava Lamp™ Flare™ Panicle Hydrangea

Lavalamp™ Flare™ carries white, upright conical flower clusters that age through pink to red, bringing a long summer-to-fall display to small planting spaces. This compact selection, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Kolmavesu’ (PP26928), matures about 2–3 feet tall and wide and suits walkway edges, borders, and patio containers. [Bloomin’ Easy](https://bloomineasyplants.com/plant/hydrangea-pan-flare/) lists the cultivar’s size, season, sun exposure, and uses; [Dawes Arboretum](https://dawesarb.arboretumexplorer.org/taxon-33616.aspx) identifies the named selection and its patent number and date. ## Appearance and placement The large conical flower clusters open white and develop pink-red tones as they age, held on strong, upright stems. In North America the selection is sold as Lavalamp™ Flare™; it is also marketed in Europe as Magical Vesuvio® ([Trees and Shrubs Online](https://www.treesandshrubsonline.org/articles/hydrangea/hydrangea-paniculata-cultivars-j-l/)). Its compact habit makes the extended flower display easy to place near a path or seating area. ## Site and season Grow it in full sun to part sun in USDA zones 3–8. Choose moist, well-drained soil; the nursery describes a mature height and spread of 24–36 inches, and the breeder lists flowering from early summer into fall ([Bron & Sons](https://www.bronandsons.com/products/line/flowering-shrubs-roses/flare-hydrangea-07812), [Bloomin’ Easy](https://bloomineasyplants.com/plant/hydrangea-pan-flare/)). Dawes Arboretum lists plant patent PP26,928 dated July 12, 2016. ## Maintenance Keep the soil moist but well drained, as the nursery recommends. Panicle hydrangeas flower on new growth, so late-winter or spring pruning is appropriate if shaping is needed ([Bron & Sons](https://www.bronandsons.com/products/line/flowering-shrubs-roses/flare-hydrangea-07812), [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hydrangea-paniculata/)).
