About First Editions® Diamond Rouge® Panicle Hydrangea

Diamond Rouge® is the First Editions® panicle hydrangea ‘Rendia’ PP24,667, a compact, upright shrub with long-lasting rounded flowerheads. The flowers open white, then turn pink, intense raspberry red, and finally wine red; cooler fall nights can strengthen the red finish. Its dark-green summer foliage shifts to dark orange in fall. ([First Editions® profile](https://firsteditionsplants.com/product/diamond-rouge-panicle-hydrangea/)) ## Seasonal color and placement The breeder lists a mature size of about 4–5 feet tall by 3–4 feet wide, full sun to part shade, and USDA zones 3–8. Flowers begin in July and take on red color earlier than many pink panicle hydrangeas; the heads continue changing as the season advances. Use it as a small hedge or focal shrub, and cut flower stems for arrangements. ## Siting Plant in well-drained soil where the shrub receives sun for flowering and some afternoon shade where summer heat is intense. Panicle hydrangeas bloom on the current season’s growth and tolerate more sun than many hydrangea species. NC State Extension also notes their shallow roots and recommends mulch. ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hydrangea-paniculata/)) ## Maintenance Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the upright framework and remove weak stems. The US patent record identifies ‘Rendia’ as USPP 24,667, published July 22, 2014 ([patent record](https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP24667P2/en)); this is a patent reference, not a statement about its current legal status.
