Tuff Stuff Ah-Ha® is a compact, deciduous mountain hydrangea with double lacecap flowers. Its blooms can be pink or blue according to soil chemistry, and it reblooms from early summer through fall.
## In the Garden
At about 2–3 feet tall and wide, the mounded shrub works in borders, edging, containers, cut-flower plantings, mass plantings, or as a specimen. The breeder lists it for Zones 5–9 and part sun to sun, with flowers on both old and new wood. The double florets have a waterlily-like form, while the foliage is green. Its registered selection is ‘SMNHSDD’ (USPP 29,832; Can 6,515). ## Maintenance
Use moist, well-drained soil and steady moisture during dry spells; the breeder rates water needs as average. Routine pruning is unnecessary. Remove dead wood in early spring and leave healthy stems intact because cuts can remove flower buds. A 2–3-inch bark mulch helps protect shallow roots, and spring fertilizer is optional.
