Spreading Beauty is a low, spreading lacecap mountain hydrangea whose flowers may read pink or blue as soil pH changes. It can rebloom from summer into fall and suits a compact border or container; Better Homes & Gardens lists about 3 feet tall by 4 feet wide and USDA zones 4–9. [Better Homes & Gardens](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/plant-dictionary/shrub/hydrangea/) [Hortensias du Haut-Bois](https://hortensias.fr/en/product/spreading-beauty-hydrangea-serrata/)
## Garden character
The flat flower heads have small central fertile florets and showier outer florets. On this species, soil pH can shift flower color from blue in acidic conditions toward pink in more alkaline soil. The green leaves can turn red or burgundy in autumn, extending interest after bloom. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hydrangea-serrata/)
## Siting and care
Give it fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Hydrangea serrata grows in full sun to partial shade, though light or open shade is preferable in warmer climates. In warm regions, protect it from hot sun and keep summer watering consistent. The cultivar page describes a compact cushion-like habit and recommends partial shade, making it a useful choice for a smaller shaded border, rock garden, or container.
## Maintenance
This hydrangea blooms on the previous season’s stems, so do only light shaping after flowering. In early spring, remove weak or winter-damaged stems; avoid routine hard pruning that would remove next season’s flower buds.
