About St John's Wort Blue Velvet™ Plant

Blue Velvet™ forms a rounded Hypericum mound with cool blue foliage and golden-yellow summer flowers. Spring Meadow Nursery identifies the selection as Hypericum x 'Cfflpc-1', while Quackin Grass Nursery lists it as Hypericum kalmianum 'Blue Velvet'; their published size ranges overlap at a compact shrub scale. See [Spring Meadow Nursery](https://springmeadownursery.com/plantfinder/blue-velvet-45390) and [Quackin Grass Nursery](https://www.quackingrassnursery.com/plant/Hypericum-kalmianum-Blue-Velvet) for the breeder and nursery profiles. ## Foliage and flowers The foliage is blue to bluish and holds the plant’s interest through the growing season. Numerous golden-yellow flowers open in summer, and Quackin Grass lists the plant as attractive to honey and native bees. Its domed, wider-than-tall habit makes it a useful low shrub around taller plantings. ## Site and climate Grow Blue Velvet in full sun or part sun and well-drained soil. The breeder lists USDA zones 4–8; Quackin Grass gives the same range. Both sources describe the cultivar as about 2–3 feet tall, while the nursery currently lists a 24–30 inch height and 30–36 inch spread. The displayed height range uses inches because its upper end is three feet. ## Maintenance Little pruning is usually needed. Spring Meadow recommends trimming in late winter or early spring when shaping is needed; Quackin Grass suggests spring planting for sites near the northern edge of its range. Use it in mixed borders, foundation plantings, edging, hedges, or mass plantings, where its blue leaves and summer flowers can contrast with green foliage.
