About Splash Select™ Red Hypoestes

**Splash Select™ Red** is PanAmerican Seed’s red-splash member of the Splash Select polka-dot plant series, *Hypoestes phyllostachya* (PAS2344). Its mounded, spreading leaves add a bright foliage accent to partially shaded annual borders and mixed containers, and it can also be grown indoors ([PanAmerican Seed](https://www.panamseed.com/Products/034202477004463/hypoestes-splash-select-red/)). ## Foliage and placement The cultivar is sold for foliage rather than flowers: its green leaves carry red blotches, a pattern consistent with the contrasting-color splashes described for the Splash series by [University of Wisconsin Extension](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/polka-dot-plant-hypoestes-phyllostachya/). PanAmerican lists 4–6 inches as the potted crop height and gives 10–18 inches as garden height; the plant spreads 12–14 inches. Use the garden height for beds and the potted figure only for nursery containers. Its 12–16-inch spacing suits a low front edge or a small mixed planting. ## Light and water Place it in bright filtered light or partial sun. Wisconsin Extension reports that color is stronger in partial shade than in full sun, while very low light can fade the leaves and make older stems leggy. Outdoors, treat it as a warm-season annual where winter cold prevents survival; [Illinois Extension](https://extension.illinois.edu/flowers/hypoestes) classifies it as a tender annual. In pots, use porous, organic-rich mix and water thoroughly while it is actively growing, then let the surface dry slightly before watering again. ## Maintenance Pinch growing tips back periodically to keep the mounded canopy compact. Avoid persistently wet mix, which favors root rot, and monitor for powdery mildew, whiteflies, aphids, and mealybugs as noted by Wisconsin Extension.
