About Steeds Japanese Holly Shrub

Steeds Japanese holly is an evergreen shrub with a strong upright, pyramidal habit and glossy green foliage. It can be sheared into formal shapes and suits a hedge, border, or repeated planting ([Kiefer Nursery](https://kiefernursery.com/product/ilex-crenata-steeds/); [Iron Creek Nursery](https://www.ironcreeknursery.com/plant/Ilex-crenata-Steeds)). ## Size and siting One exact-cultivar profile lists 6–8 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide; another lists 10 feet tall and 5 feet wide, so allow room for a mature shrub above a compact foundation plant. Published hardiness ranges vary: Kiefer lists Zones 5a–9b, while Iron Creek gives 6–9. Full sun to part shade is suitable, and a sheltered site helps protect Japanese holly from winter winds. ## Soil and seasonal interest Japanese holly generally prefers acidic, moist, well-drained soil. This selection stays evergreen; Iron Creek notes summer and winter foliage interest and lists spring bloom, while Kiefer reports white flowers and black berries. Across the species, fruit forms on pollinated female plants, so berries depend on plant sex and compatible male pollen ([NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/ilex-crenata/)). ## Maintenance Water regularly while it establishes and avoid prolonged dry soil. Kiefer reports average water needs and says the branches shear well into formal shapes; trim only as needed to maintain the outline.
