Ilex glabra, known as inkberry, is a slow-growing, upright-rounded, broadleaf evergreen shrub native to eastern North America. It features smooth, glossy dark green foliage that remains attractive year-round. This stoloniferous plant can form colonies via root suckers, making it ideal for hedges, borders, or mass plantings. It thrives in acidic, moist to wet soils and is remarkably adaptable to full sun or shade. Female plants produce small, jet-black berries that persist through winter.
