## Growing Conditions
NC State Extension describes Impatiens walleriana as a bedding and shade plant that flowers from late spring until the first fall frost. Part shade, moist well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, and slightly acidic pH suit the species. Plants in hotter, sunnier positions need extra water, while saturated soil can cause root rot. NC State lists the species for USDA zones 10a through 11b and notes that it is often grown as an annual outside tropical regions. See [NC State Extension’s species profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/impatiens-walleriana/) for the broader care guidance.
## Landscape Use
Impatiens walleriana is used in planters, hanging baskets and containers, and in mass along shaded borders or under trees. These species-level uses suit the mixture where a flowering bedding display fits the site; follow the light and moisture needs of the planting area.
## Maintenance
Keep the soil moist and well drained, adding water during hot dry periods without leaving the root zone waterlogged. In cooler climates, grow it as a warm-season annual and protect it from cold; the species persists as a perennial only in tropical regions.
