Create design onlineAbout Sweet Caroline Sweet Potato Vine
Sweet Caroline is a Proven Winners series of ornamental sweet potato vines (*Ipomoea batatas*) with several named foliage selections. The breeder’s comparison chart lists Bronze, Light Green, Raven, and Red varieties and describes the line as trailing. Foliage color and leaf form depend on the selected variety; see the [Proven Winners comparison chart](https://www.provenwinners.com/Sweet-Caroline-Illusions-Comparison-Chart) and [grower culture guide](https://www.provenwinners.com/professionals/growers/plant-culture/sweet-potato-vine-ipomoea) for the series profile.
## Growing conditions
NC State Extension describes the species as an annual ground cover or vine suited to full sun or partial shade and loamy, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. The plant is frost-sensitive, so protect it from cold temperatures and plan for seasonal replacement where winters are severe. See [NC State Extension’s species guide](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/ipomoea-batatas/).
## Landscape use
Use its trailing stems as ground cover or in ornamental plantings where a foliage vine is wanted. Choose a named Sweet Caroline variety when a particular leaf form or color is desired, since the series includes distinct selections.
## Maintenance
Plant outdoors after frost danger has passed and keep the soil well drained. Trim trailing stems as needed to keep the vine within its allotted space.
