About Herbst's Bloodleaf

Herbst's bloodleaf (Iresine diffusa f. herbstii) is a short-lived evergreen perennial from northern Peru, grown in North Carolina as an annual or houseplant. It is valued for red stems and oval leaves that are often reddish-purple with lighter red or pink midribs; its small white flowers are inconspicuous. ## Growing Conditions Plant in full sun and moist, well-drained soil; the North Carolina profile lists loam and sand. It gives cultivated dimensions of 1–1.5 feet tall and 1–3 feet wide, while its text notes that plants can reach 5 feet in native habitat. Pinching the tips encourages a bushier shape and can control growth below 3 feet. Keep container soil evenly moist, reducing water during cooler seasons. The profile lists USDA zones 10a–12b and recommends borders, containers, and houseplants. See the [NC State Extension bloodleaf profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/iresine-diffusa-f-herbstii/) for its full growing notes. ## Maintenance Pinch the growing tips to encourage branching. Remove the inconspicuous flower buds when foliage is the main display. Keep the soil evenly moist, then reduce watering during cooler seasons. Stem cuttings are the recommended propagation method.
