Create design onlineAbout Dwarf Crested Iris
Dwarf crested iris is a native perennial that forms a low groundcover and flowers in spring. NC State Extension gives a mature height of 4–9 inches and width of 6–12 inches; its detailed traits table also lists a narrower 6–9-inch height range, so these values remain ranges rather than selected numeric points. ## Flowers and foliage
Flowers appear in April and May in blue, purple, pink or white, with a contrasting orange or yellow crest. The bright-green, sword-shaped leaves continue to cover the ground after flowering. NC State reports this species across the central and eastern United States and lists USDA hardiness zones 3a–9b.
## Site and soil
Part sun to partial shade suits this woodland iris. It prefers rich, well-drained soil and tolerates dry shade; full sun is possible when the plant receives more moisture. Soil that is too rich can favor foliage over flowers. Use it in partly shaded rock gardens, woodland sites or perennial borders.
## Maintenance
Allow the plant to spread as a groundcover. NC State reports resistance to deer damage and drought, and notes occasional slug and snail problems. Division or seed can be used for propagation. [NC State Extension plant profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/iris-cristata/)
