Bearded Iris

Bearded iris is a rhizomatous perennial in the Iridaceae family, listed by [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/iris-x-germanica/) as *Iris x germanica*, with *Iris germanica* noted as an earlier name. It bears large fragrant flowers, while height and color vary widely among its many cultivars, so named selections should be checked for their own mature traits. ## Garden setting Grow bearded iris in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. It tolerates some shade, though heavy clay can hinder growth. Its uses include perennial borders, cutting gardens, mass or naturalized plantings, woodland gardens, and beds beside a walkway or patio. ## Planting and watering Set the rhizome at soil level or cover it lightly, and leave it unmulched. This iris prefers drier soil; overwatering or mulch can contribute to root rot. ## Maintenance Fertilize in early spring. After flowering, divide clumps in mid- to late summer; remove faded blooms and clear affected roots and foliage promptly. Watch for iris borer and fungal problems, especially where plants are crowded or the soil stays wet.
