About Bearded Iris 'Nelly Tardivier'

Nelly Tardivier is a tall bearded iris that flowers in midseason. Its medium lavender-violet standards rise above amaranth falls that turn rose-copper at the edges, finished by old-gold beards. ## Bloom and form The American Iris Society records this selection at 33 inches (84 cm). Its contrasting standards, falls, and beard give the flower a layered look; flowering height and timing can vary with growing conditions. ## Site and soil Choose full sun for best flowering, though bearded irises tolerate some shade. Grow Nelly Tardivier in rich, well-drained soil; heavy clay and persistently wet conditions can cause problems. Set the rhizomes at soil level or cover them only lightly, and avoid mulch over them. Established plants tolerate dry conditions, so avoid overwatering. ## Garden use Use this iris in a sunny perennial border, a cutting garden, or repeated in a naturalized planting. It also suits a walkway or patio edge. NC State Extension describes bearded irises as versatile border and cutting-garden plants, with many cultivar colors and heights. ## Maintenance Remove faded blooms and divide crowded clumps in mid- to late summer, after flowering. Clear old foliage at season's end and watch for iris borer and rot. Keep the rhizome exposed to good drainage.
