About Bearded Iris 'Peggy Sue'

Peggy Sue is a tall bearded iris with an extended flowering season and reported rebloom. Its lightly ruffled flowers have dawn-pink standards, orient-pink falls, and mandarin-red beards, with a pronounced sweet fragrance. ## Bloom and form The American Iris Society records this selection at 34 inches (86 cm) and describes early-to-late bloom and rebloom. Repeat flowering depends on growing conditions and climate, so treat rebloom as a possibility rather than a yearly guarantee. ## Site and soil Choose full sun for best flowering, though bearded irises tolerate some shade. Grow Peggy Sue in rich, well-drained soil. Set rhizomes at soil level or cover them only lightly, and avoid mulch over them. These irises prefer drier soil; established plants tolerate dry conditions, while overwatering can contribute to rot. ## Garden use Plant this fragrant, pink-and-red iris in a sunny perennial border or cutting garden, or repeat it in a naturalized planting. Its flowering stems also suit a walkway or patio edge. Leave enough space around the rhizomes for air circulation and seasonal division. ## Maintenance Remove faded flowers and divide crowded clumps in mid- to late summer, after bloom. Clear old foliage at season's end and watch for iris borer and rot.
