About Bearded Iris 'War Chief'

War Chief is a tall bearded iris introduced by Schreiner in 1992. The [American Iris Society cultivar page](https://wiki.irises.org/TbUthruZ/TbWarChief) records a 37-inch (94 cm) height, early-midseason bloom, red self flowers (RHS 185A), yellow beards, and purple-based foliage. The society also lists an Honorable Mention in 1995. ## Growing Conditions Choose full sun for the best flowering, although bearded irises tolerate some shade. Set the rhizomes at soil level or cover them lightly in rich, well-drained soil, and leave them unmulched. They prefer drier soil; excess moisture around the rhizomes can cause rot. See [NC State Extension’s bearded-iris guidance](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/iris-x-germanica/) for broader care notes; its recommendations describe the species group, whose cultivars vary. ## Landscape Use The tall flower stems suit a perennial border or cutting garden. Bearded irises can also be mass planted or placed along a walkway or patio, according to the broader NC State profile. ## Maintenance Remove faded flowers and clear old foliage at the end of the season. Divide crowded clumps in mid- to late summer after flowering. NC State Extension also recommends early-spring fertilization and prompt removal of roots and leaves affected by iris borer.
